LAB-SF-01 / Teacher preparation
Eight-panel research screenfold
What changes when information can be seen as both an extended strip and a compact book?
Modern classroom adaptation. Getty provides a modern accordion-teaching precedent. Dimensions, join, content plan, access tests and assessment are newly specified classroom choices. The model is not an ancient manufacture demonstration or replica; invented icons are not Indigenous glyphs.
These protocols have not been physically or classroom tested. Pilot the actual materials and chosen transfer method before teaching. Use the stated fallback if its conditions cannot be met.
Before teaching
Choose actual school-approved products; read current labels/SDS and school requirements.
Pilot the chosen hands-on method and document real failures, quantities, timings, drying/release and accessibility.
Verify equipment, supervision, handling, waste and incident procedures.
Apply lab-specific fallback whenever procurement, source visibility or safe-transfer conditions cannot be met.
Lab-specific review
Preserve eight-panel 80 × 12 cm dimensions and separate six-panel alternative.
Mark the two exposed outer end faces while the stack is closed. Center 10.6 × 12.6 cm covers on 10 × 12 cm panels; glue only within the end-panel boundary. The 3 mm overhang stays free and unglued to the next panel, and adhesive must not bridge the crease.
Teacher preparation
Class quantities for 30 students
- 30 drawing-paper strips, 80 × 12 cm, approximately 120–160 g/m²; six spare strips or an equivalent repair supply
- Optional 60 pre-cut boards, 10.6 × 12.6 cm, about 0.5–1 mm thick
- 15 shared glue sticks; six long rulers; 30 ordinary rulers, pencils, erasers, and smooth spoons or capped pens
- 30 planning/record sheets and at least 30 scrap sheets; additional clean scrap for pressing covers
- Colored pencils or school markers; separate paper bands for identifying stored models
- Flat tables supporting the full 80 cm strip; dry storage space
Thirty strips contain 2.88 m² of usable paper. A roughly 15% cutting allowance raises the nominal requirement to about 3.32 m², but roll width, cutting layout, spares, and defects determine the actual purchase. The alternative joined strips consume more paper because of the overlaps. Prepare each pair as 45 × 12 cm and 37 × 12 cm, with a 2 cm overlap, so the assembled length is exactly 80 cm. Locate the overlap at 43–45 cm to avoid 40 and 50 cm folds. This is a modern classroom seam.
Allow approximately 30–45 minutes for cutting and sorting, then at least 15 minutes to make a pilot. Any guillotine or knife remains an adult-only operation under school policy. Check that the actual paper folds without splitting, that marker dries without sticking to neighboring panels, that the seam remains flexible, and that cover adhesive sets within the available schedule. Follow the product's instructions rather than promising an eight-minute cure. If it remains wet, defer the handling test.
Use a safe school product appropriate to the age group. A label indicating conformity to ASTM D-4236 describes toxicological review, not edibility or freedom from every hazard. Prefer suitable AP-seal materials where available, check local requirements, and retain ingredient/product information for accommodations. No bark harvesting, skin preparation, cooking, raw pigments, solvent use, or historical-material processing belongs in this activity.
Structure answer key
The untrimmed strip contains eight panels, each 10 × 12 cm, separated by seven folds. Face A uses the valley/mountain sequence V/M/V/M/V/M/V from its stated orientation. With the strip folded as directed, the backs of the first and last panels are the exposed outer end faces. Mark them while the book is closed before attaching boards. Apply adhesive only inside each end panel; the 3 mm board overhang remains unglued and must not attach to the adjacent panel across the fold. Two boards cover two of sixteen paper faces, leaving fourteen accessible paper faces. Without boards, all sixteen remain available, though they cannot all be seen in one flat view.
The difficult comparison between A2 and the reverse of A6 requires turning or rearranging the model. Accept different safe handling solutions. Grade the observation rather than requiring a particular gesture. Timing is optional and must not become a proxy for skill, disability, or historical reading efficiency.
Access and failure records
Offer pre-marked or pre-folded strips, larger labels, tactile fold markers, partner-directed construction, and a prepared model for analysis. Record a torn fold or failed seam as a material observation. If a teacher substitutes a paper weight, adhesive, or cover dimension, record the substitution on the model's colophon and local lesson log. Full analytical credit remains available for an accurately described unsuccessful build.

Editorial corrections
Current baseline: Glue only within end-panel boundaries; 3 mm overhang stays free. Add 30 ordinary rulers, storage bands and pressing scrap as specified in teacher notes.
Earlier allocation: General instruction never to bridge a fold; six shared long rulers.
Clarify overhanging cover attachment and complete current supplies.
Safety and stop conditions
Read these controls with the teacher before handling materials. Chemical etching is historical context only; the practical intaglio activity uses drypoint without mordants.
Controls
Use pre-cut board and paper; any craft knife or guillotine is teacher-only, according to school policy.
Use rounded scissors if students need a trimming step, and a capped pen or smooth plastic spoon rather than a sharp scoring tool.
Do not boil bark, harvest tree bark, process animal skin, grind minerals, heat indigo–clay mixtures, use solvents, or handle dry pigment powders.
Do not use historic pigments, cinnabar, orpiment, lead colours, unknown earths, or genuine antiquities. No open flame, UV lamp, lasers, acids, or chemical “authenticity tests.”
No eating or drinking at the paint station. Wash hands; wipe spills promptly. Keep wet work away from screens and power supplies.
Use a stable cool LED desk lamp for raking light; do not shine it into eyes. Never fold, wet, rub, scrape, or take a sample from an original manuscript or valued modern artwork.
Record and follow individual allergy, sensory, motor, and vision accommodations. Do not ask pupils to disclose private health information to classmates.
Stop when
Unknown or unsuitable art materials, discomfort, unsafe cutting, damaged tools, or unsafe wet/electrical setup: pause and follow school procedures.
A source feature or matched historical scene is illegible or unverified: stop interpretive claims and use a labeled schematic or metadata exercise.
Trained adult only
Craft knives, guillotines, stock cutting, product selection, source/right checks, and permission-controlled photography.
Excluded activities
Bark boiling or harvesting, skin processing, mineral grinding, heated indigo–clay mixtures, solvents, dry pigment powders, historic toxic pigments, genuine antiquities, flame, UV, lasers, acids, chemical authenticity tests.
Sacred reenactment, unverified translation, automated completion of damaged signs, compulsory personal genealogy/migration/religion disclosure.
Cultural and source review
Specific specialist/practitioner review or permission is needed before claiming cultural endorsement or expanding into community-specific or restricted practice. No paid review, purchase, or spending is imposed as a blanket release gate for these explicitly labeled ordinary classroom adaptations. Do not claim any such consultation has occurred.
